Whirlpool Refrigerator Troubleshooting & Helpful FAQs
General, model-independent guide based on Whirlpool refrigerator manuals. Features vary by model; always check your model’s User Instructions.
1. Safety & Electrical
A: No. Plug it directly into a grounded 3-prong outlet and never remove the ground prong.
A: It needs a 115 V, 60 Hz AC, 15- or 20-amp fused, grounded outlet. A separate circuit for the refrigerator is recommended.
A: No. Use an outlet that cannot be turned off by a switch.
A: Turn cooling off or set the control to OFF, then unplug the refrigerator.
A: No. Use a nonflammable cleaner and keep flammable materials and vapors, such as gasoline, away from the refrigerator.
A: It protects the compressor and helps prevent fuse blowing or breaker tripping.
A: No. Use two or more people to move and install it to avoid back or other injury.
A: Remove the doors, leave shelves in place, and have refrigerants evacuated by a licensed, EPA-certified technician.
A: Yes. The product may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
A: No. Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection.
A: Use a sturdy glass. Pressing a thin or weak glass can cause cuts or breakage.
A: No. Do not hit the glass doors, as they may break.
2. Installation & Placement
A: Install indoors, away from heat sources, with at least ½ inch space on each side and top, and 1 inch behind.
A: Leave at least 2 inches on each side so the doors can swing open properly.
A: The refrigerator is designed for 55°F to 110°F, but 60°F to 90°F is best for efficient cooling.
A: A minimum 36-inch cabinet cutout is normally required. If you want to remove crisper pans easily, a 54-inch opening is recommended.
A: A cold water supply of 30 to 120 psi is required. For reverse osmosis systems, the pressure to the RO system should be at least 40 to 60 psi.
A: Check the sediment filter, allow the storage tank to refill, or remove the refrigerator water filter if it is reducing pressure.
A: Use copper or PEX tubing. Copper and PEX connections help avoid off-taste or odor in ice or water.
A: No. Use a saddle-type shutoff valve that complies with local plumbing codes; piercing valves reduce water flow and clog easily.
A: Rub a small amount of liquid dish soap over the adhesive with your fingers, wipe with a damp cloth, and dry. Do not use sharp tools, rubbing alcohol, flammable fluids, or abrasive cleaners.
A: Cover the floor with cardboard or hardboard, pull the refrigerator straight out, and do not wiggle or “walk” it.
A: Door removal requires disconnecting power, water tubing, and wiring, and should be done by two people following the manual. If unsure, call a qualified technician.
A: Place the handle on the shoulder screws, push it flush, and tighten the setscrews. After snug, tighten an additional quarter-turn.
A: Adjust the front leveling feet; turn left to raise that side and right to lower it. Tilt the refrigerator slightly rearward so doors close more easily.
A: Use the alignment screw on the bottom hinge. Turn the screw right to raise the door and left to lower it.
A: Do not clean glass shelves with warm water when they are cold, and use both hands when removing them. Tempered glass may shatter into small pieces if exposed to sudden temperature change or impact.
3. Controls & Temperature Settings
A: They are located on the dispenser panel.
A: The display enters sleep mode after 2 minutes of no use. The first button press only wakes the display without changing settings.
A: The refrigerator is preset to 37°F (3°C) and the freezer to 0°F (-18°C).
A: Wait 24 hours for the refrigerator and freezer to cool completely before adding food.
A: Press and hold TEMP for 3 seconds, then use SMART GRID to raise or FAST ICE to lower the setting. Press TEMP to switch between fridge and freezer, and FILTER to save.
A: The refrigerator range is 33°F to 45°F (0°C to 7°C), and the freezer range is -5°F to 5°F (-21°C to -15°C).
A: If the refrigerator is too cold, raise the setting 1°; if too warm, lower it 1°. For the freezer, raise 1° if too cold, or lower 1° if too warm or making too little ice.
A: Press and hold SMART GRID and FILTER at the same time for 3 seconds. “COOLING OFF” appears; repeat to turn cooling back on.
A: Adjusting to the coldest setting will not cool the compartments any faster. It only changes the target temperature.
A: It sounds when a door is left open for 5 minutes and cooling is on. It repeats every 2 minutes; close both doors to turn it off.
A: Yes. Press any button on the control panel to temporarily mute the alarm; the Door Ajar icon will still show.
A: Fast Ice increases ice production for 24 hours. It only works if the ice maker is turned on.
A: Smart Grid monitors energy price and demand and delays high-energy tasks to off-peak times. Press SMART GRID to turn off Smart Delay and Delay Ice for 4 hours.
A: Delay Ice temporarily stops ice production for up to 4 hours depending on the Smart Grid notification.
A: It can be set to MEAT for 28°F to 32°F storage or VEG for vegetables. Wait 24 hours between adjustments.
A: Set it to LOW for fruits and vegetables with skins, and HIGH for fresh leafy vegetables.
A: Cool air from the freezer is directed to the door bin. Slide the control left for less cold and right for colder.
4. Ice Maker & Water Dispenser
A: Allow 24 hours for the first batch, discard the first three batches, and wait 72 hours for full ice production.
A: The dispensing system will not operate when a door is open. On some models, only the freezer door must be closed.
A: After connecting water or replacing the filter, press the water pad 5 seconds on and 5 seconds off until water flows. Then continue until 3 gallons (12 L) has been dispensed.
A: Press a sturdy glass against the water dispenser pad and hold it close to the spout.
A: Select cubed or crushed with ICE TYPE, press a sturdy glass against the ice dispenser pad, and hold it close to the ice guide.
A: Cubes are crushed before dispensing, which may cause a slight delay and normal crusher noise. Ice pieces may also vary in size.
A: A few ounces of crushed ice may dispense along with the first cubes when changing from crushed to cubed.
A: Press LIGHT to turn it ON, press again for DIM, and press a third time for OFF.
A: Press and hold TEMP and FAST ICE at the same time for 3 seconds. The lock does not shut off power to the refrigerator, ice maker, or dispenser light.
A: Remove the ice storage bin and slide the switch on the freezer door wall to ON (left) or OFF (right).
A: Press down the release lever, tilt the bucket outward, and lift it with both hands. Replace by sliding it onto the door and tilting it upright until it clicks.
A: Yes. The ice maker has an automatic shutoff, but the control remains in the ON position.
A: No. Sharp objects can damage the ice container and dispenser mechanism.
A: No. Do not store anything on top of or inside the ice maker or storage bin.
A: Remove or separate the clogged ice with a plastic utensil. For crushed ice jams, temporarily switch from crushed to cubed to clear the jam.
A: Ice will automatically stop dispensing. Wait a few minutes for the dispenser to reset, then resume; for large amounts, take ice directly from the bin.
A: With the water filter removed, dispense 1 cup of water. If it fills in 8 seconds or less, pressure meets the minimum requirement.
A: Dispense at least 1 quart (1 L) of water every week to maintain a fresh supply.
A: Avoid it if possible. Water softener chemicals such as salt can damage ice maker parts and lead to poor-quality ice.
A: New plumbing connections can cause off-flavored or discolored ice or water. This should go away over time.
A: Odor can transfer from food, old ice, non-recommended water supply lines, or minerals in the water. Use airtight food storage, discard old ice, and consider a water filter.
A: If the water filter was recently installed or replaced, the system may need additional flushing. Flush the water system again.
5. Water Filter & Air Filter
A: Replace it at least every 6 months, or sooner if water flow decreases noticeably or the status says REPLACE.
A: ORDER means it is almost time to change the filter. REPLACE means it is time to change it now.
A: After changing the filter, press and hold the FILTER button for 3 seconds. The ORDER and REPLACE icons will disappear.
A: Locate it in the top-right corner of the refrigerator compartment, lift the filter cover door, pull the old filter straight out, insert the new filter with the arrow pointing up, close the cover, and flush the system.
A: The air filter reduces odor buildup and helps maintain a cleaner environment inside the refrigerator.
A: It is behind the vented door, usually on the rear or left interior wall near the top of the refrigerator compartment.
A: Remove it from packaging, lift open the vented door, snap the filter into place, and close the door.
A: Place the indicator face-down and press the bubble on the back until it pops. Then slide it into the notches or store it in a visible place.
A: Replace it every 6 months, when the status indicator has completely changed from white to red.
A: Squeeze in on the side tabs to release it, remove the old status indicator, and install the new filter and indicator.
6. Smart Features
A: Some models have built-in Wi-Fi and must be connected through your home wireless network.
A: Go to http://smart.whirlpool.com. You will need the Smart Appliance ID number, which is on a label inside the refrigerator compartment above the crisper on the right wall.
A: It monitors energy price and demand information and delays high-energy tasks to off-peak times. The Smart Grid icon appears when active.
A: Smart Delay adjusts cooling, defrost, and high-energy features such as Fast Ice during peak energy periods.
A: Delay Ice temporarily stops ice production for up to 4 hours depending on the Smart Grid notification.
A: Press the SMART GRID button on the dispenser control panel. They turn off for 4 hours, then automatically reactivate.
A: Features can include remote temperature adjustment, power outage notification, door ajar notification, water filter status notification, and energy monitor.
A: You will be notified when power is restored after an outage so you can check food safety.
A: You will receive a notification if either door is left open longer than 10 minutes.
A: It tracks current power usage and provides an overview of previous power consumption.
7. Cleaning, Care, Vacation & Moving
A: Clean both sections about once a month to avoid odor buildup, and wipe up spills immediately.
A: Avoid abrasive or harsh cleansers, window sprays, scouring cleansers, flammable fluids, waxes, concentrated detergents, bleach, petroleum products, paper towels, and scouring pads.
A: Unplug it, hand wash removable parts and interior surfaces with mild detergent in warm water, wash stainless and painted exteriors, and dry thoroughly.
A: Routine cleaning is not needed in normal homes. If the environment is greasy, dusty, or has pets, clean every 2 to 3 months.
A: No. The interior and dispenser lights are LEDs that cannot be changed. If they do not work, call for service.
A: Use up perishables, turn off the water supply, turn off the ice maker, and empty the ice bin.
A: Remove all food, turn off the water supply at least one day ahead, turn the control to OFF, clean and dry, and prop both doors open.
A: Turn off the water supply, disconnect the water line, empty the ice bin, remove food, turn cooling off, unplug, clean and dry, secure removable parts, raise the front or screw in leveling legs, and tape the doors and power cord.
8. General Operation & Noise
A: Check if it is plugged into a grounded outlet, if the outlet has power, if the fuse or breaker tripped, if cooling is on, and if it is a new installation—allow 24 hours to cool.
A: New refrigerators use energy-efficient motors that may run longer at lower speeds. It may also run longer if the room is warm, a large load of food was added, or doors are opened often.
A: Many sounds are normal: buzzing/clicking from the water valve, cracking/crashing from ice ejection, popping from walls expanding, pulsating/whirring from fans/compressor, rattling from water lines or items on top, gurgling during defrost, and sizzling when water drips on the heater.
A: Check for blocked vents, doors not closed completely, frequent door openings, a large amount of warm food, or incorrect control settings. Adjust to a colder setting and check again in 24 hours.
9. Doors & Leveling
A: Gaskets may be dirty or sticky. Clean them and the contact surfaces with mild soap and warm water, then rinse and dry.
A: A door may be blocked open by food packages, bins, or shelves out of position. Move items away and make sure all packaging is removed.
A: The refrigerator may need leveling or door alignment. Follow the leveling and door alignment instructions.
A: It is not level. Remove the base grille and lower the leveling feet until they touch the floor.
10. Ice & Water
A: Check if the ice maker is turned on, allow 24 hours for first ice and 72 hours for full production, remove jams with a plastic utensil, check water pressure, and make sure the water filter is installed correctly.
A: Check that doors are closed, the ice maker is on, the bin is installed correctly, ice is not clogged, the dispenser is unlocked, and the pad is not pressed too long. For crushed ice jams, switch to cubed ice to clear.
A: Check that the refrigerator is connected to a water supply, the shutoff valve is open, the water line is not kinked, water pressure is at least 30 psi, the dispenser is unlocked, and the filter is not clogged or installed incorrectly.
A: Causes include new plumbing connections, ice stored too long, food odor transfer, non-recommended water supply lines, minerals in the water, or a recently installed filter that needs more flushing.
